Personal Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Personal - Essay Example Grandma would always tell me, "Make something of yourself or somebody will make a fool out of you". I struggled in school, but her relentless passion pushed me to heights I never knew I could climb. Today, as I count the blessings of my teenage years, I am also reminded of my long past parents. I try not to think of them, but my mind does not obey my will. It wanders back into the blackened past of my childhood, and the spilled memories of my loving parents. The memories pull at me like a magnate to steel as I think about the years I spent with my parents while they worked as Christian missionaries in nameless Central American villages. I remember sleeping in the stillness of a rainforest or with the cacophony of an ocean pounding the beach. There I could dream all night in a fairyland far away from here and far away from my home, my young mind lost in the stillness of a Guatemalan night. The silence, occasionally broken by a primate's shrill cry, sounded like loneliness looking for a place to hide. At nine years old, I had an uneasy sense of the jungle and even more so since father had begun to lock the door at night. My imagination worked overtime to solve the riddle of the locked door and thought that monsters may come to snatch me away at any time. This night as my mother tucked me in she accidentally dropped a candle and stumbled in the darkness. I could see her hand quivering as she stooped to re-light the wick. Her anxiety boiled over into my pot leaving me shaken. I called for my father but my mother said simply, "Quiet, he's gone out". Afraid of the answer, I could not choke up the words to ask, "Where Why". The noisy crack from the jungle woke me to a crisp wakefulness. Three more explosions echoed through the room and ricocheted for seconds through my vacant head. I was alarmed, yet had only my fantasy of the events that were taking place right outside my window. The closed door loomed like an unsolved puzzle, beckoning me as I struggled across the room. I cracked the door like a gambler checking his hole card and stared into the inky depths. Suddenly, I heard my mother scream from behind a Banyan tree. Panicked, I squeezed between an old crate and a stack of lumber at the side of the house. I could hear my mother choking and struggling, and though I felt the need to go to her rescue, I was frozen in place. Locked in time. My mother's last gasp of fright was followed by the surreal sounds of life making an unscheduled exit. I looked to see my mother's lifeless body lying next to the tree. My father approached and for a moment I had the unrealistic euphoria that he was the hero coming to save the village. He solemnly knelt over her body as the silence returned, broken only by my father's whimpering and the songs of angels. The orange glow of fire flashed from the jungle and my father repulsed in a series of awkward contortions. His body, thrown back from the gunfire, came to rest inches from my mother's hand as if she was reaching for an escort to guide her to heaven. The next few seconds took hours to pass as I stared in a state of horrified shock. I watched three men dressed in black as they examined my parent's bloodied bodies. Their sneering and mumbling fell like water on a sponge, instantly absorbed by the thick undergrowth. I stayed motionless and could hear their voices go faint, seeping back into the night. I cried, never moving, until the safety of the

Use of Technology in Forensic Accounting Investigation Essay

Use of Technology in Forensic Accounting Investigation - Essay Example Use of Technology in Forensic Accounting Investigation A forensic investigation is normally undertaken so as to solve both criminal and civil cases in a court of law. The cases that are solved involve fraud, tracing of stolen assets and money that has been laundered. The objects collected during an investigation act as forms of evidence as to what really transpired before and after the incident happens. Forensic accountants gather evidence that is used in carrying out investigations of financial crimes that may take time and effort to compile and complete in the appropriate way. They are expected to follow rules that should be applied in the local courts as per the stipulated policies and principles that govern the exercise. An accident refers to an event or a sequence that occurs as a result of careless driving and unintentional circustamances while crime is an event that violates a policy. The proof that the accident occurred is shown by provision of evidence of event. The role played by technology in carrying forensic investigation involves improving the criminal investigation process so as to ease the work of the police of tracking all types of persons who may be violating the law. The businessmen as well as the police benefit from using information technology because enables them carry out their businesses in the right way and also trap criminals who are a threat to their lives and businesses. (Kanellis, 2006:20). The criminal records and suspect information are normally computerized therefore any investigator in any part of a country can access information that is relevant to conduct an investigation concerning any suspected criminal. Computer files are searched according to the investigators desires since relevant information can be found within the computerized system. Computer models are important information technology facilities that assist a designer in testing designs through using many conditional systems that have been stipulated within an act. Artificial intelligence is a program that is used by the police in obtaining pictures, age and determining predictions so as to point out areas where there may be crime. Cyberspace enables the police to track and trap criminals who frequently steal individual's property while at their residential areas. This technology is also used in trapping vehicles that have been carjacked since the computer has mechanism that shows the routes taken by a driver during and after the vehicle has been stolen, hence the vehicles can be traced with ease. Technology products and their usefulness in carrying out forensic investigation The use of technological appliances such as the DNA_on-a-chip helps the forensic practitioners to move fast to the scene of incident so as to carry out an investigation on the cause and effect of the criminal activity. The importance of using this type of facility is that it helps to create awareness concerning the strategic factors that are necessary when carrying out an investigation in the police force. It also helps in enlightening the forensic science providers, government and the higher education personnel thus giving them the necessary insight to fight crime (Kanellis, 2006:20). Digital forensics is a facility that is used in assisting people in carrying out investigation processes that are based on following the physical crime scene procedures. Investigations are carried out through preserving a system and searching for the digital events that took place at the scene of an incident or accident. The

Ted Bundy was born on November 24, 1946 in Burlington, Vermont. He was famous for being a well-known American serial killer. Bundy murdered numerous young women and girls during the 1970s. He is said to have murdered 36 young women and girls that have spanned across four states. The biggest question in anyone’s mind would be why would such a person do something so heinous and horrendous? According to psychologists Bundy’s to have had multiple theories on his motive. This essay will look at two of those theories which are Necrophilia, and Antisocial Personality Disorder. The first theory is that Bundy was driven to kill in order to satisfy his urge to have sex with dead bodies. The second theory is that he had antisocial personality disorder which devoids this person from feeling a lack of remorse or guilt. Theory one suggests that Bundy was a necrophiliac. That is, he was someone who needed to have sex with dead bodies in order to fulfill a deep urge. According to Dr. Robert Keppel a psychologist who interviewed Bundy, â€Å"It was the one part of his criminal behavior that truly embarrassed him because, as ugly as it was, it satisfied him sexually†. Serial killers get pleasure from different elements of a murder (Keppel, 2010). â€Å"All of Bundy’s lures, traps, and murders all came secondary to his sexual satisfactions at having a dumpsite where his victims would wait for him in silent decay†. Bundy would feign an injury, to help attract young women to help him to his car. Once the women were by his car, that’s when he would make his move of attacking the women and rendering them unconscious (Hinchliffe, 2011). In one instance Bundy seized a young girl and took her into a wooded area where he intended to rape and release her but ended ... ...RESSION OR ANGER; THEY ARE TRYING TO FILL AN EMPTINESS IN THEIR SOULS: [Final Edition]. The Absolute True Diary of a Part Time Indian

One thing Arnold does not do is complain. Even though he was â€Å"born with water on the brain†, gigantic feet, ten more teeth then normal, stutter and a lisp, Arnold still doesn't complain though. Just because he does not complain does not mean he loves the life he was given. Junior still thinks life would have been much easier if he was white. He tends to put himself down quit often. Alexie Sherman illustrates what differences there are between the Indians and the white people. Indians covered their private parts with their tiny hands† (Alexie 11). Saying that Indians have tiny hands indicates that the whites had bigger hands therefore meaning that they were more powerful and/or superior over the whites. Another thing Alexie Sherman shows the readers is that Arnold has very low self-esteem because he's used to people calling him retarded so often that he starts to believe he really is. And then you'd be wondering why you're reading a story written by uch a retard† (Alexie 4). It shows that Arnold doesn't have that much confidence in himself and he believes Indians are treated the way they are because they deserve to be. Alexie Sherman is saying that Indians don't be live that white people are truly better then Indians. â€Å"Some Indians think you become white if you try to make your life better, if you become successful† (Alexie 131). This shows how Indians have lost all hope for themselves and that's probably why they don't even ry to make their lives better, because no matter what they do they still aren't as good as the Indians. Some of the Spokane Indians believe if one Indian becomes successful then he is no longer an Indian but instead a white. In conclusion Alexie Sherman uses alot of metaphor does/says many things to express how the Spokane Indians feel about themselves and how they have low self-esteem. And because of this many Indians think they can't get anywhere far in life.

The Layout of Joseph Campbell’s Hero’s Journey in The...

Joseph Campbell’s Hero’s Journey can be found through the layout of The Epic of Gilgamesh. Steps from each of the major phases such as the departure, initiation, and return are steps in the epic. Gilgamesh‘s Hero’s journey begins with the call to adventure this is where Gilgamesh tells Enkidu that they are to fight the beast, Humbaba ( 110.131-136). The call which is refused takes place within Gilgamesh’s dreams that he will fail (117.50-60). The step is not very important due to the face that it is not an outright refusal, only subconscious thoughts. Supernatural appears in numerous forms throughout the epic, one being his mother is a goddess (106.268-270). The next imporatnat step listed is crossing of the first threshold. Gilgamesh and Enkidu leave the safe haven of Uruk and enter the forest (113.20-24) and begin their adventure together. When Enkidu’s dies, Gilgamesh enters the belly of the whale. That is the last of the steps of Joseph Campbell’s Hero’s Journey. During the rest of the story, the steps change order and some are taken out completely. One could argue a valid statement for each of the steps, but some are more figurative rather than literal. The Odyssey the Epic Hero Cycle Odysseus is the King of Ithaca. He has been fighting in the Trojan War and helped the Greeks win the Trojan War. After winning the Trojan War he wants to get home and reclaim his kingdom and to see his wife and his son, Telemachus. While on his journey home Odysseus faces many

Genetic Cloning Essay - 1926 Words

Cloning and the ability to manipulate and modify DNA has increased immensely in recent years. The field of genetic reproduction is creating a variety of unknown social and ethical consequences that are particular to our present time. Such consequences, although unknown now, of the manipulation of nature at such a primary biological level will have disastrous effects on the generations of the future. Cloning as a new science, concerns itself with the replication of organisms through asexual scientific method creating exact replications of the parent cell. However, cloning in the 90s has developed to the point where manipulation of human D.N.A is a very real prospect and many issues surrounding it must be addressed. These issues and the†¦show more content†¦Here it can be seen that the consequences of manipulating nature for our own uses are insidious if not unnecessary. Genetically engineered food products have caused a recent grand reaction of protest in Europe, as many farming communities there have refused to use imported genetically modified food crops that have been developed in America. From cows to potatoes almost all primary food markets have been affected by genetic engineering. America, endorsing such altered flora products does so in the name of conquesting world hunger. Although the evidence of genetically modified food crops, saving the world is scarce especially in third world countries. Ideally, the social potential for genetically modified food products is enormous as the problems of overpopulation can be addressed effectively if the access to such technology is truly made available to the people of the world. Human manipulation of fauna is a precarious field where outcomes are unknown. In more recent developments in the field of ‘cloning’ the case of ‘Dolly’, the genetically cloned sheep in the UK in 1997, evidence since of unknown problems have come to light. Recent scientific analysis (McCall, Yahoo.1999) has shown that the complex outcomes of the manipulation of fauna directly, are totally unpredictable. ‘Dolly’ was cloned three years ago and has apparently developed successfully, until close analysis has shown that in fact dolly has theShow MoreRelatedGenetic Cloning2214 Words   |  9 Pagestechniques in genetic engineering to produce human clones.
